Living in the snow we’ve learned that finding fun things to do indoors is super important. Otherwise you get one wild and crazy toddler running around and a mommy with her head about to spin! Below are some easy and fun indoor activities sure to keep you occupied while stuck inside. Please feel free to comment with your own fun ideas!
1. Play Hats.
Take those old party paper plates and make something fun out of them! Simply cut from the center of the plate out to the “ridged” edge of the plate. This should leave enough room for your toddler to slip their little head through the hole to make the base of the hat. From here, let your little one color, paint, glue whatever to get the hat they desire. Then let their imagination run and let the hat be the center of their world. Great hate ideas – crown, pirate hat, train conductor, baseball player…
2. Pet Rock.
Yes, the pet rock is an oldie but a goodie. The key is to run around outside and gather some rocks from around the house (hopefully it’s not too nasty outside and you can do this). Next, take the rocks inside and you and the little ones can give them a “bath” aka wash them. Then paint and decorate to your little heart’s content. Great pet rock ideas: cars, trucks, people, royalty, dinosaurs, and of course trains
3. Make a fort.
The key with making a fort is encouraging imagination and working with your child’s favorite theme. Making a castle fort or a control tower is a fun way to make an old indoor activity fresh.
4. Make your own playdough.
This is a fun way to help your little one see one of their favorite activities from conception. There are a few different recipes I have found online courrtesy of about.com (basically – use what you have readily availble in your cabinets!)
Rubbery Playdough
2 cups baking soda
1 1/2 cups water
1 cup cornstarch
Mix with a fork until smooth. Boil over medium heat until thick. Spoon onto plate or wax paper.
Nature’s Playdough
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 cup water
2 tablespoons oil
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
beet, spinach, and carrot juice
Mix flour, salt and oil, and slowly add the water. Cook over medium heat, stirring until dough becomes stiff. Turn out onto wax paper and let cool. Knead the playdough with your hands until of proper consistency. Use as is, or divide into balls and add a few drops of the vegetable juices to make green, pink, and orange.
Just Like the Real Playdough (so they say)
1 cup flour
1 cup water
1 tablespoon oil
1 tablespoon powdered alum
1/2 cup salt
2 tablespoons vanilla
food coloring
Mix all dry ingredients. Add oil and water. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until reaching the consistency of mashed potatoes. Remove from heat and add vanilla and food coloring. Divide into balls and work in color by kneading the playdough.
Oatmeal Playdough
1 cup flour
2 cups oatmeal
1 cup water
Gradually add water to flour and oatmeal in bowl. Knead until mixed (this playdough is sticky, but unique in texture.) Model as with clay.
Tip: Add cornmeal or coffee grounds in small quantity for texture.
Nutty Butter Playdough
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup powdered milk
1 cup honey
1 cup oatmeal
Mix together and play.
Kool-Aid Playdough
2 1/2 to 3 cups flour
2 cups boiling water with 1 package Kool-aid (any flavor)
3 tablespoons corn oil
1/2 cup salt
1 tablespoon alum
Mix ingredients and knead with flour (may take up to 1 extra cup). Use more if the dough draws moisture in high humidity. Keeps well, has a nice fragrance and is very colorful and very flexible.
4. Telephone
Yes, bust out those red cups that you are no longer using from your partying days. Put a string through the bottom and watch in delight as your little one tries to figure out how the heck he can hear mommy in the cup!
5. Have a scavenger hunt.
Think of easy clues and mark the clues with colors and shapes so that little ones who can’t read yet cans till participate. This is a great time to utilize those flash cards you bought but never really seem to use. Hide fun objects around the house and put the flash card near the object your looking for.
6. Snow Ice Cream?
